When this tool helps

Use a decision log for choices that affect later work, carry meaningful trade-offs, or may need review when conditions change. The record helps absent colleagues understand the choice without replaying the meeting.

How it works

Write the exact question

Frame one choice clearly enough that a reader can tell what was in and out of scope.

Record the choice and reason

Capture the decision and the most important evidence or criteria, not a transcript of the debate.

Set ownership and a trigger

Name who owns the decision and the condition, evidence, or date that would justify review.

How to read the result

A strong record can be read on its own. Someone should understand what changed, why the choice was reasonable at the time, and when it may be reopened.

Know the limit: The builder creates text only. It does not approve the decision, verify authority, preserve a legal record, or notify affected people.

Put the output to work

Copy the draft into the shared workspace your team already uses. Let the people involved correct it, keep the final version beside the relevant evidence, and link the result from the meeting record. For the full method, read How to Keep a Decision Log.

Common questions

Specific answers about the calculation, privacy, and limits of this tool.

What is a decision review trigger?

It is a date, threshold, new fact, or changed condition that justifies reopening the choice. A useful trigger prevents both constant relitigation and permanent attachment to an outdated decision.

Does the decision log builder approve or store a decision?

No. It formats a record in your browser. The authorized owner must approve the choice and place the final record in the team's trusted system.
